About our men's kilts

Men's kilts for sale, made by kilt-makers since 2017

Kilt & Jacks has been making men's kilts by hand since 2017 from our workshop. Every kilt we ship — whether traditional Scottish tartan, gothic leather, workwear utility, hybrid, or camouflage — is drafted from three measurements you send us: waist at the natural waistline (not the trouser waist, which is the single most common measurement mistake), hip at the widest point, and length from waist to the middle of the kneecap. There is no factory sizing. There is no closest fit.

The five styles of men's kilt we make

Most men who order from us buy a tartan kilt — the traditional Scottish kilt in 16oz worsted wool, hand-basted so the sett matches across every pleat. Tartan kilts come in three yardages: five-yard for casual wear and Highland games, six-yard for occasions between casual and formal, and eight-yard — the formal standard, with deep box pleats and proper drape — for weddings and full Highland dress.

For customers who want the shape of a kilt without the wool, we make leather kilts in full-grain and split-hide with brass hardware; utility kilts in heavy cotton canvas with cargo pockets and reinforced belt loops; hybrid kilts combining tartan aprons with leather or denim panels; and camouflage kilts in polycotton for tactical and outdoor use.

Choosing your men's kilt

Choose by occasion first, material second, budget third. If you're buying for a wedding or formal Highland event, an eight-yard tartan in 16oz worsted is the right answer — made once, worn for decades. If you'll wear your kilt often to Highland games, ceilidhs, or casual formal occasions, a five or six-yard tartan is more comfortable to carry. For daily wear where pockets and movement matter more than tradition, utility or hybrid. For gigs, festivals, and alternative styling, leather. Not sure? Message us with the occasion — we'd rather trade three emails now than remake a kilt in six weeks.

Every kilt ships in ten working days regardless of style, is cut from blended wool woven at our workshop and registered where applicable with the Scottish Register of Tartans, and is guaranteed to fit the measurements you sent us. If it doesn't, we remake it. See our returns policy for full terms.

Frequently asked

Questions before ordering

How much does a men's kilt cost?
Prices depend on style and construction. Utility kilts start at $99, camouflage at $120, tartan five-yard at $99, hybrid at $129, leather at $250, and tartan eight-yard formal at $129. Complete Highland outfits — kilt, jacket, sporran, hose, and brogues — start at $250. All pricing includes made-to-measure cutting and hand finishing. Shipping is calculated at checkout.
How long does it take to make a custom kilt?
Ten working days from order confirmation to shipment, regardless of style or yardage. That includes cutting, pleating (hand-basted for tartan kilts), stitching, finishing, pressing, and final inspection. Most established handmade-kilt makers quote four to twelve weeks — we ship in ten because our workshop is set up exclusively for kilts and Highland dress, with wool held on hand rather than sourced per order.
Which style of kilt should I buy?
For a wedding, formal event, or full Highland dress, an eight-yard tartan is the traditional and correct choice. For Highland games, ceilidhs, and casual formal wear, a five or six-yard tartan is lighter and easier to move in. For daily wear or outdoor work where pockets matter, utility. For gigs, festivals, or gothic styling, leather. For modern styling that keeps the kilt silhouette, hybrid. Still unsure? Send us the occasion and your budget and we'll narrow it down.
How do I measure myself for a kilt?
Three measurements. Waist at the natural waistline, one to two inches above your trouser waist, sitting on the hipbone — this is the most common mistake, and measuring at the trouser line will give you a kilt that hangs too low. Hip at the widest point across the hips, standing naturally. Length from your natural waist to the middle of your kneecap, taken kneeling. Our size guide has photographs. If you're between sizes or unsure, contact us before ordering.
What happens if my kilt doesn't fit properly?
If the kilt doesn't match the measurements you sent us, we remake it at no charge. If you sent us incorrect measurements, we'll usually still remake it once — reach out and we'll work through it. Every kilt is checked against your measurements before packing. Full details are in our returns policy.
Do I need to be Scottish to wear a kilt?
No. Universal tartans (Black Watch, Royal Stewart, Flower of Scotland, Isle of Skye, Caledonia) are worn by anyone regardless of ancestry. If you have Scottish or Irish family, you may also wear your clan tartan — most Scots and Scottish organisations welcome this. Non-tartan styles (leather, utility, hybrid, camouflage) carry no ancestral association at all. The Scottish Register of Tartans is the definitive record if you want to research a specific tartan.
Do you ship kilts internationally?
Yes. We ship worldwide via tracked courier, including the US, Canada, Australia, the EU, and beyond. Shipping is calculated at checkout. Import duties and customs charges on international orders are the buyer's responsibility — customs behaviour varies by country, and we can advise on likely charges if you ask before ordering.
